Primitive Futurism + TATANKA

I am very compelled by our parallels. You keenly understand and articulate the challenges we collectively face, but more to the point, viable solutions drawing from disregarded indigenous wisdom, universal truth, regarding sustainability and adaptation, adopted and passed down for millennia, which is a also core goal of TATANKA. So, on multiple levels I immediately recognized potential for our efforts to fuse for the good of our stakeholders.

My first thought after viewing your presentation is that you could make ideal architects for the TATANKA Performance Arts Center, considering our mission.  My understanding of architecture is limited to what I learned from Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead, so please correct me where my assumptions are incorrect, but regarding the facility, we want to be 100% sustainable and Green, ideally earning LEED Platinum certification. As our current potential site is located on a river, with a reliably abundant supply of wind and sunlight for power, and the construction materials will be locally sourced and sustainable, our certification chances are excellent.

The site is adjacent to a Native American reservation in South Dakota, where I lived and taught (portfolio) for years. The site is within a large state-owned recreation area, but it is multi-zoned, so the plan would be for a multipurpose Performing Arts Center for marginalized groups (Indigenous, etc.) across the U.S. and as we are recruiting orchestra members internationally, it would be a magnet school (9-12 and dual credit with a local community college) with a global scope. There is much to share, but you can find details on the website, www.TATANKA.site

I am in discussion with a potential lead investor (read here), but they won’t have an answer for me for another week. It is a K-12 school district, funded mainly by the BIA, additionally funded by federal and state entities, so there are numerous other potential secondary investors. However, I am currently seeking talent (read here) so on the off-chance either or both of you happen to be musicians, specifically musician-composers, singers, or performance artists (read here), and you could envision yourself involved in those additional roles, please apply here. The more our members and staff can do as part(s) of TATANKA, the better the outcomes and success.

Primitive Futurism = Global Sustainability

Sustainability has become a critical issue in our modern world as we continue to face environmental challenges such as climate change, resource depletion, and pollution. In order to ensure the well-being of future generations and the health of our planet, it is essential that we adopt sustainable practices in all aspects of our lives. One viable solution is the concept of Primitive Futurism.

Primitive Futurism is a philosophy that combines traditional and indigenous knowledge with modern technology to create sustainable solutions for the future. By drawing on the wisdom of our ancestors and integrating it with cutting-edge innovations, Primitive Futurism holds the potential to address a wide range of environmental and social challenges in a holistic and integrated way.

One of the key principles of Primitive Futurism is the idea of living in harmony with nature. Traditional societies have long understood the interconnectedness of all living beings and the importance of respecting the natural world. By re-embracing these ancient teachings, we can learn to live in balance with our environment and reduce our impact on the planet.

Another aspect of Primitive Futurism is the emphasis on local and community-based solutions. By prioritizing small-scale and decentralized systems, we can reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and create more resilient and sustainable communities. This approach also fosters a sense of connection and interdependence among people, strengthening social cohesion and promoting well-being.

Also, Primitive Futurism encourages a shift towards a more sustainable and regenerative economy. By valuing the health of ecosystems and the well-being of all living beings, we can build a more equitable and sustainable economic system that works in harmony with the natural world. This may involve practices such as regenerative agriculture, renewable energy, and ethical business models that prioritize social and environmental impact over profit.

In addition, Primitive Futurism recognizes the importance of cultural preservation and revitalization in building a sustainable future. By honoring and celebrating diverse cultural traditions, languages, and ways of life, we can create a more inclusive and harmonious society that values the richness of human diversity. This in turn promotes social justice and equity, which are essential components of a truly sustainable world.

Furthermore, Primitive Futurism encourages a reevaluation of our relationship with technology. While modern technology has undeniably brought many benefits, it has also had negative impacts on the environment and society. By incorporating traditional knowledge and values into the design and use of technology, we can create more sustainable and ethical solutions that leverage the power of innovation while respecting the limits of the natural world.

Moreover, Primitive Futurism emphasizes the importance of holistic thinking and systems-level approaches to sustainability. By considering the interconnectedness of all living beings and the complex relationships between social, economic, and environmental systems, we can develop more effective and comprehensive solutions to the challenges we face. This requires a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach that draws on diverse perspectives and knowledge systems.

Finally, Primitive Futurism encourages a reconnection with the land and a deepened sense of place. By fostering a deeper appreciation for the natural world and our local environments, we can cultivate a sense of stewardship and responsibility towards the Earth. This in turn can inspire us to take action to protect and preserve the biodiversity and ecological health of our planet for future generations.

Primitive Futurism offers a compelling vision for a more sustainable and harmonious future. By drawing on the wisdom of traditional and indigenous knowledge, integrating it with modern innovations, and embracing principles of ecological and social justice, we can create a world that is in balance with nature and in harmony with all living beings. It is through a holistic and integrated approach to sustainability that we can achieve a thriving and resilient future for all.

Location

A tentative location is Lower Brule, South Dakota 57548, where the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe is located. These are wise, good, Indigenous people, who could teach us much, which is in line with both of our philosophies and methods. I know because I have lived among and/or taught the Sioux people for five years, and learned exponentially more than I could ever teach.

Many U.S. tribes are working to become economically independent of the U.S. government. Their local casino, The Golden Buffalo (as in TATANKA) is one source of jobs for the tribal members. Another is the Lower Brule Community College, and many people are employed at the K-12 school district, among other local businesses, but the TATANKA Performing Arts Center would be a profound source of income, culture, and sustainability for the Lakota people and all in the Central South Dakota region.

Here are a few potential sites for construction, all on the Missouri River (very clean that far north & great for swimming, fishing, boating, camping, and of course an off-grid, sustainable water source), with ideal selections in yellow/orange as we would have sunsets to the west, and sunrises to the east, each horizon being the river:

The tentative location is remote, but we have lived in remote, rural America since 2004. I am from Chicago. My wife is from a major city in Brazil. We intentionally raised a family in the country and are glad we did. We had no trouble adjusting, but it is a significant change from urban living, in numerous regards. The pros outweigh the cons considerably. If you seek a cultural, peaceful, safe, serene and stable future for you and those you love, this is it. You need to visit to understand completely and of course, we’d be happy to host.

If the current potential deal falls through, here is our Plan B location, an historic log-built lodge with room for 20+ in the heart of the Black Hills National Forest, all on a Trout River.
